Essai pieces from Luxembourg's early 1970s coinage trials were produced in extremely limited numbers for official evaluation and distribution to collectors and institutions — never for circulation. This particular trial strike preceded the regular 10 Franc nickel series and differs from the adopted type, which is what the L#398-var designation flags. Luxembourg's small mint output during this period means die varieties and trial distinctions carry genuine documentary weight.
