| Additional information |
Mali's independence from France was proclaimed on September 22, 1960, following the collapse of the short-lived Mali Federation, which had itself dissolved just weeks earlier when Senegal withdrew. This coin was struck to mark that independence, and the timing of the federation's breakup meant Mali entered sovereignty almost immediately in a state of political improvisation.
KM#1 was produced in very limited quantities and is seldom encountered outside of specialized West African collections.
