Guinea's 1985 coinage came during a period of acute economic disorder following the death of Sékou Touré in April 1984 and the military coup that immediately followed. The new regime, CMRN, inherited a currency — the syli — so debased and distrusted that it was abolished outright and the franc restored that same year at a rate of 1 franc to 100 sylis. This coin is a direct artifact of that monetary reset.
