Guinea's 1962 coinage was among the first issues produced after the country severed ties with the French West African franc zone in 1960, establishing the Guinean franc as part of Sékou Touré's broader push toward economic independence from France. The relationship had collapsed acrimoniously — de Gaulle withdrew French technical and financial support almost overnight following Guinea's 1958 referendum vote against the French Community, the only territory to do so.
The coins were struck abroad, as Guinea lacked domestic minting infrastructure entirely.
