The "George Cohen" attribution here refers to the footballer George Cohen, England's 1966 World Cup-winning right back. These Congo-issued silver pieces belong to a sprawling category of licensed commemorative coins produced for the international collector market — struck not for circulation in the DRC but sold wholesale to distributors, with the issuing central bank receiving a fee. Congo's name appears on hundreds of such issues from the 2000s, most having no connection whatsoever to Congolese history or economy.
