François Rude is best remembered for the *Marseillaise* relief on the Arc de Triomphe, completed in 1836, but this piéfort honors him as a native of Dijon — the Monnaie de Paris ran a sustained series through the 1980s commemorating French regional figures on collector-grade doubles of circulation types. Piéforts of this era were struck in deliberately limited numbers, typically a few hundred pieces, sold directly through the Monnaie's subscription program rather than through normal numismatic retail.
The GEM reference P2 suffix confirms the piéfort designation within the broader Rude issue sequence.
