| Additional information |
Burundi gained independence from Belgian administration in July 1962 as a kingdom under Mwami Mwambutsa IV, but a coup in November 1966 — led by Prime Minister Michel Micombero — abolished the monarchy and declared a republic. This coin marks the first full year under that republic, struck while Micombero was consolidating single-party control through the party UPRONA. The anniversary it commemorates was, in practical terms, a political legitimization exercise.
Low mintage figures are the norm for Burundian commemorative gold of this period, with most issues produced primarily for the international collector market rather than domestic circulation.
