The Democratic Republic of the Congo has been one of the most prolific issuers of novelty collector coinage since the late 1990s, producing themed series for virtually every foreign market imaginable. These pieces are struck not for domestic circulation — the Congolese franc is the country's actual currency — but purely as licensed collectibles sold through European and American distributors. The painting referenced here, by Johan Barthold Jongkind, dates to 1864 and is held at the Musée d'Orsay.
Silver-plated copper rather than sterling indicates a lower production tier even within this series.
