Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse presents a full-color reproduction of Sandro Botticelli's celebrated Renaissance masterpiece 'The Birth of Venus' (c. 1484–1486), rendered within an ornately decorated rectangular frame. The composition depicts the goddess Venus standing nude upon a giant scallop shell, having emerged fully-grown from the sea, as she is borne toward the shore by the breath of the wind gods Zephyrus and Chloris at left, while a Hora or Grace awaits at right to drape her in a flower-embroidered cloak. The vivid polychrome coloring faithfully reproduces the tonal qualities of the original tempera panel, now housed in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.

Aanvullende informatie

The Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued collector coins under its post-1997 authority largely through licensed distributors operating in Europe, a common arrangement for nations whose numismatic programs are aimed entirely at the international collector market rather than domestic circulation. This piece never crossed the Congo River.

Botticelli's painting has appeared on numerous collector issues from various issuing authorities since the 1990s. The DRC's use of it here involves no particular rights or institutional connection to the Uffizi.
