| Reverse description | The reverse presents a full-color reproduction of Sandro Botticelli's celebrated Renaissance masterpiece 'The Birth of Venus' (c. 1484–1486), rendered within an ornately decorated rectangular frame. The composition depicts the goddess Venus standing nude upon a giant scallop shell, having emerged fully-grown from the sea, as she is borne toward the shore by the breath of the wind gods Zephyrus and Chloris at left, while a Hora or Grace awaits at right to drape her in a flower-embroidered cloak. The vivid polychrome coloring faithfully reproduces the tonal qualities of the original tempera panel, now housed in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence. |
