The Democratic Republic of the Congo has issued a significant volume of silver commemoratives since the late 1990s, most produced by European mints for the collector market rather than domestic circulation. Many were struck under licensing arrangements with little direct oversight from Kinshasa, and the KM#99.2 designation distinguishes this from a closely related variant — differences between the two subtypes are minor enough that they are frequently conflated in dealer inventories.
