This piece belongs to a wave of novelty issues produced for the collector market under Benin's name, with no meaningful connection to domestic circulation. The M4 Sherman saw its most consequential African deployment during the North African campaign of 1942–43, but Benin has no historical or military tie to the type — the subject was chosen for its collector appeal, not national relevance.
The "stainless steel (Paper)" composition notation reflects a foil-laminated or planchet-insert construction used by a handful of private mints producing low-mintage exotica for the souvenir trade under West African franc zone issuing authorities.
