The BCEAO's FAO-themed essais of the early 1980s were produced as pattern strikes to demonstrate proposed designs for circulation coinage tied to United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization campaigns promoting agricultural development across member states. This particular piece was never adopted for general circulation. Essais from the BCEAO in this period were struck in very limited quantities, typically for distribution to ministry officials and numismatic bureaus rather than the public.
