This piece belongs to the commemorative issues produced for Benin under the authority of the BCEAO — the West African central bank that has managed the CFA franc zone since 1962. Benin itself has no independent monetary policy; the franc is pegged to the euro at a fixed rate guaranteed by the French Treasury, a arrangement dating to the post-colonial monetary agreements of 1945.
