This dual-denomination piece — valued simultaneously in both the French franc and the Austro-Hungarian forint — was struck to satisfy the Latin Monetary Union's specifications while circulating within the Habsburg economy. Austria-Hungary joined the LMU framework in practice without ever formally acceding to the treaty, a pragmatic workaround that allowed Hungarian-minted gold to pass at face value across French, Italian, and Swiss borders. The arrangement suited Vienna's export ambitions but irritated full LMU members who had no reciprocal guarantee on Habsburg coinage.
The H#2119 and H#2120 references reflect documented obverse die variations across the decade-long run.
