The 1986 10 Francs belongs to the Victor Hugo commemorative series issued in conjunction with the centenary of his death in 1885. Hugo's face on French coinage was itself a minor political act — the Third Republic had long venerated him as a republican icon, and the centenary commemorations of 1985–86 were explicitly tied to that ideological inheritance.
