The 1924 Paris Games are best remembered numismatically for France's own commemorative issues of that year, making the DRC's 2003 retrospective an odd piece of collector-market product with no organic connection to the event. The Congo had no existence as a sovereign state in 1924 — it was the Belgian Congo, a colonial territory under Leopold II's successors.
These late retrospective Olympic issues, produced in bulk by European minting contractors for small nations with nominal issuing authority, were never intended for circulation.
