The Trésor Colonial de la Guadeloupe issued its own notes independently of the Banque de la Guadeloupe, which operated concurrently. These treasury issues were specifically intended to address small-denomination circulation needs that the larger commercial bank did not adequately serve. The colonial treasury series to which this note belongs is among the earliest surviving paper issues attributable to Guadeloupe, and survivorship is poor — the humid Caribbean climate was unkind to paper, and few examples from this 1884 series have surfaced in European or American collections.
Pick lists only a handful of denominations for this issuer, suggesting the series was intentionally limited in scope.
