Iraq's non-magnetic copper-nickel coinage of 1982 exists because of a quiet but significant shift in procurement. The magnetic version of this type (KM#160) had been struck in clad steel, but sourcing and production constraints during the early Iran-Iraq War years — by 1982 the conflict was already grinding into its second year — prompted the Central Bank to authorize a parallel issue in solid copper-nickel. Both types circulated simultaneously, distinguishable only by a magnet.
