Iraq's Republican coinage program of the 1960s was itself a product of the 1958 revolution that overthrew the Hashemite monarchy — the Baathists and various military factions that followed spent much of the decade fighting over who would actually govern the country. The 1967–1971 date span covers the aftermath of the June 1967 Arab-Israeli War, during which Iraq deployed troops to the Jordanian front, and the internal coup of July 1968 that brought the Baath Party back to consolidated power under Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr.
Coins of this type circulated through one of the more politically turbulent stretches of modern Iraqi history, yet show wear consistent with genuine use.
