The Jordan Currency Board was established in 1950, but the 1949-dated coinage was struck in anticipation of it — produced at the Royal Mint in London ahead of formal monetary independence from the British Mandate framework. This issue predates the Central Bank of Jordan by over a decade; the Currency Board itself was a transitional body, issuing coins under Hashemite authority without functioning as a full central bank.
The bronze composition here mirrors the Mandatory Palestine coinage it was designed to replace in circulation weight and feel — a deliberate choice to ease public acceptance.
