The 1918 Polish fenig patterns were struck during the German-administered Regency Kingdom of Poland, a puppet state established after the Central Powers' occupation of Russian Poland. Germany's decision to issue subsidiary coinage for the territory was partly political — a calculated gesture toward Polish autonomy that stopped well short of genuine independence. These iron patterns preceded the circulating zinc issues that actually entered production, and relatively few survived outside institutional collections.
