Bydgoszcz was transferred from German to Polish administration in January 1920 under the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, and this note belongs to the chaotic transitional period that followed. The city's German name, Bromberg, still appears in the printer's imprint — Richard Niehl's press had operated there under German rule and continued printing locally even as the municipal authority reorganized under Polish governance. Small-denomination Notgeld of this kind filled the void left by the collapse of the old monetary system before Polish state currency could circulate reliably in the newly acquired territories.
