Obverse description Central to the obverse is the official emblem of the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics: a kotinos, a wreath fashioned from an olive tree branch, evoking the ancient Olympic tradition in which the kotinos was awarded to victorious champions. The Olympic rings are enclosed within the wreath, the whole device surrounded by a circle of twelve stars, referencing European unity. The Greek legend and denomination appear within the field.

Additional information

Part of Greece's extensive silver program tied to the Athens 2004 Summer Olympics, this issue is one of several dozen denominations produced for that games — a mintage program so large it ultimately dampened secondary market demand across the entire series. Wrestling was among the sports chosen for commemoration in part because of its unbroken lineage to ancient Greek athletic tradition; it featured in the original Olympic program at the 708 BC games in Olympia.
