Schokland, a former island in the Zuiderzee, was abandoned by royal decree in 1859 after repeated flooding made it uninhabitable. The Netherlands' reclamation of the surrounding land through the Noordoostpolder project in the 1940s left Schokland stranded in the middle of a polder — a geographical oddity that earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1995, the first Dutch site to receive the designation.
This issue belongs to the Dutch World Heritage coin series, which has produced gold and silver variants annually since 2012.
