The Peace Palace in The Hague marked its centenary in 2013 — a hundred years since Andrew Carnegie's $1.5 million donation funded its construction as a home for international arbitration. The Netherlands issued this coin in that year to commemorate the anniversary, the first major jubilee under Willem-Alexander, who had acceded to the throne just months earlier following Beatrix's abdication in April.
Carnegie's gift came with conditions: the building had to be completed within ten years, which it narrowly was, opening in August 1913.
