The Dutch Waterlines series commemorates the network of inundation defenses — deliberately flooded lowland corridors — that protected Holland from invasion for over three centuries. The New Dutch Waterline, constructed after the French occupation exposed the old system's failures, remained a functioning military defense until 1940, when the Wehrmacht bypassed it entirely by using airborne troops at Rotterdam and Dordrecht, rendering the entire concept obsolete in under 72 hours.
