Willem-Alexander's coronation on 30 April 2013 marked the first time in 123 years that a Dutch king had ascended the throne — Queen Beatrix having abdicated that same day in favor of her eldest son. The Royal Dutch Mint issued this piece as part of a broader commemorative program tied directly to the abdication-coronation event, an arrangement that had become something of a Dutch institutional tradition by the time Beatrix herself had taken the throne from Juliana in 1980.
The .925 fineness places it in the sterling range rather than the fine silver used for bullion issues, a deliberate choice by the KNM for collector-grade commemoratives of this type.
