This piece belongs to Spain's ongoing series dedicated to masterworks in the Prado's permanent collection. "Las Hilanderas" — the painting referenced here — is among Velázquez's most compositionally complex works, long misread as a straightforward genre scene before art historians identified the Rape of Arachne myth playing out in the background. The painting's correct attribution and dating remained contested well into the twentieth century, with some scholars placing it as late as the 1650s, near the end of Velázquez's life.
The Royal Mint has issued this series in strict limited runs tied to UNESCO and Prado partnership agreements.
