Obverse description The obverse depicts the geometric pavement pattern of the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome, designed by Michelangelo, rendered in precise architectural detail. At center, the letter 'R' denotes Rome, the city where the treaty was signed, while to the right the letter 'E', representing Europe, is formed from elements of the pavement design. Incorporated within the pavement to the left are the two-letter initials of the six original signatory nations: BE (Belgium), DE (Germany), IT (Italy), FR (France), LU (Luxembourg), and NL (the Netherlands). The date 2007 appears in the lower field below the pavement, and twelve stars of the European Community form a partial arc along the upper rim. The legend REPUBBLICA ITALIANA is inscribed around the upper periphery, with the mintmark 'm' also present.
