| 正面描述 | The national coat of arms of Malta occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield bearing a white George Cross on the dexter chief and vertical red and white stripes on the sinister, flanked symmetrically by olive and palm branches. The shield is surmounted by a mural crown with five visible towers. A scroll at the base bears the legend REPUBBLIKA TA' MALTA. The country name MALTA appears to the left and the date 2017 to the right along the inner border, while twelve five-pointed stars are evenly spaced around the outer raised rim. |

In August 1942, Operation Pedestal delivered five surviving merchant ships into Grand Harbour after one of the most costly convoy battles of the Second World War. Malta's population was near starvation; fuel for the island's defending Spitfires was down to weeks. King George VI awarded the George Cross to the island collectively in April of that year — an unprecedented decoration of an entire civilian population — acknowledging that the siege had already inflicted casualties and destruction beyond what most military units ever endured.
The tanker Ohio, crippled and lashed between two destroyers, delivered her aviation fuel cargo on the feast of Santa Marija, 15 August.
