This piece belongs to Greece's long-running national parks commemorative series, which used silver issues to draw attention to protected natural areas at a time when EU environmental directives were pushing member states to formally document and publicize their Natura 2000 sites. Valia Kalda, the core wilderness area within the Southern Pindos park, is one of the least-accessible mountain regions in mainland Greece — a fact that kept it ecologically intact through the twentieth century but also largely unknown to the broader public the series was trying to reach.
