Sofia Vembo's wartime recordings made her the unofficial voice of Greek resistance during the Axis occupation — her songs, broadcast from Radio Athens before the fall and circulated clandestinely afterward, gave her a cultural authority no government appointment could have conferred. This coin was issued as part of the Bank of Greece's ongoing commemorative series honoring significant figures in modern Greek history, released on the centenary of her birth.
She died in 1978, having also built a parallel career in Greek cinema through the 1940s and 50s.
