Additional information

Issued as part of Greece's long-running commemorative program honoring figures of ancient philosophy, this coin appeared during one of the most economically turbulent moments in modern Greek history — the country was mid-bailout, negotiating with the troika, and had just enacted the largest sovereign debt restructuring in history. The Bank of Greece continued issuing collector silver throughout the crisis, largely targeting export sales to foreign numismatic markets rather than domestic circulation.
