10 Euros Santorre di Santarosa

Santorre di Santarosa was a Piedmontese liberal who helped lead the 1821 constitutional revolt against the Kingdom of Sardinia, fled into exile after its collapse, and eventually made his way to Greece to fight in the War of Independence. He died at the Battle of Sphacteria in May 1825 — one of dozens of European philhellenes who died on Greek soil for a cause that was not their own. This issue from the Bank of Greece marks the bicentennial window of that war.
