St. Paul's Abbey in Lavanttal, Carinthia, holds one of the most significant Romanesque church buildings in Austria, but its greater claim to scholarly attention is the library and archive — among the richest monastic collections in Central Europe, including manuscripts and documents dating to the abbey's Benedictine founding in 1091 under the patronage of the Sponheim dynasty. The abbey survived Josephinism, the wave of monastery dissolutions ordered by Emperor Joseph II in the 1780s, partly because it successfully argued the value of its holdings.
