Slovakia's primeval beech forests in the Carpathians — specifically the Vihorlat range in the east — were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, initially as part of a transboundary nomination shared with Ukraine. The site represents one of the largest undisturbed beech forest complexes remaining in Europe, a fact that carried genuine political weight in the post-enlargement EU years, when Slovakia was actively building its international conservation profile.
The National Bank of Slovakia has consistently used its commemorative silver program to highlight UNESCO-listed natural and cultural sites on Slovak territory. This piece was struck at the Kremnica Mint, the oldest continuously operating mint in Central Europe, having produced coinage without interruption since 1328.
