Part of Monnaie de Paris's ongoing literary France series, this piece honors Porthos, the most physically imposing of Dumas's three musketeers — a character drawn in part from a real Gascon soldier named Isaac de Portau who served in the company of Tréville in the 1640s. The billon composition, at only .333 fine, places this squarely in the collector-circulation hybrid category that French mint issues increasingly occupy: priced for buyers, not savers.
