Issued to mark the 450th anniversary of Bruegel's death, this coin was produced at a moment when attribution of his work was still actively contested — in 2019, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna was simultaneously hosting a landmark retrospective that stripped several long-accepted Bruegel attributions from the canon entirely. The Belgian mint's timing was deliberate, tying numismatic release to a year of significant scholarly reassessment rather than a round birth anniversary, since Bruegel's birth date remains unknown.
