This piece is part of Spain's ongoing Women's Day series, issued annually on or around March 8th to honor figures largely absent from earlier numismatic programs. María Moliner spent over fifteen years writing her Diccionario de uso del español largely alone, working evenings and weekends while employed full-time at the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas — the Spanish equivalent of completing a two-volume landmark of Spanish lexicography as a side project. The dictionary, first published in 1966, remains in print and in use.
Moliner was twice passed over for admission to the Real Academia Española, an institution she had effectively outworked on its own terms.
