This coin commemorates the dynastic union of Philip I of Castile and Joanna of Castile, whose 1496 marriage bound the Habsburg and Trastámara lines and set in motion the inheritance that would deliver the Spanish crown to Charles V. Philip died in 1506 at twenty-eight — cause disputed, possibly typhoid, possibly poison — leaving Joanna's grief so acute that she reportedly refused to be separated from his coffin during its transport across Castile.
Belgium claimed Philip as a native son: born in Bruges in 1478, he ruled the Low Countries before Spain was ever part of his story.
