This issue belongs to Italy's long-running "People in Europe" series, which brought together eurozone member states to produce coordinated commemorative programs in the early years of the single currency. The 2003 Italian contribution was struck by the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato — the same state body that has handled Italy's security printing and coinage since its consolidation under Mussolini in 1928.
