| Obverse description | Conjoined busts of two figures facing left occupy the central and right portion of the field: in the foreground, a bearded conquistador in armoured breastplate and gorget, identified as Vasco Núñez de Balboa; behind him, a figure wearing an elaborate feathered headdress, representing a native American dignitary. To the left, a decorative arc encloses the country name ESPAÑA and the mint year 2013, with a stylised wave motif and the commemorative date range 1513–2013 below. The outer border features a geometric star-and-zigzag pattern of pre-Columbian inspiration, framed by a beaded rim. The legend VASCO NÚÑEZ DE BALBOA arcs along the right field, with the crowned Madrid mint mark (M) beneath it. |
