Issued to mark the 500th anniversary of Agricola's birth, this coin commemorates the Finnish Lutheran bishop who effectively created written Finnish. His 1548 translation of the New Testament — "Se Wsi Testamenti" — was the first major printed work in the Finnish language, establishing spelling conventions that persisted for centuries. The Finnish Reformation under Agricola was as much a linguistic project as a theological one.
