Melita is the Latinized name for Malta, used as a personification of the island since antiquity and carried through British colonial coinage before the republic adopted it for this modern bullion series. The .9999 fineness places it among the purest gold issues in European sovereign coinage — finer than the Krugerrand, finer than the Sovereign, matching the Canadian Maple Leaf standard.
