| Reverse description | Finely modelled bust of the Marquise de Pompadour facing three-quarters to the left, her elaborately coiffed hair adorned with floral ornaments in the Rococo fashion of the mid-eighteenth century, with a decorative bow at the décolletage. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a delicately engraved brocade field of floral and foliate motifs characteristic of the period's textile arts. The legend 'MARQUISE DE POMPADOUR' curves around the upper periphery, and the birth and death years '1721-1764' are inscribed in the lower field. |
