Reverse description Finely modelled bust of the Marquise de Pompadour facing three-quarters to the left, her elaborately coiffed hair adorned with floral ornaments in the Rococo fashion of the mid-eighteenth century, with a decorative bow at the décolletage. The portrait is rendered in high relief against a delicately engraved brocade field of floral and foliate motifs characteristic of the period's textile arts. The legend 'MARQUISE DE POMPADOUR' curves around the upper periphery, and the birth and death years '1721-1764' are inscribed in the lower field.

Additional information

Issued as part of the Monnaie de Paris "Femmes de France" series, this coin commemorates Jeanne Antoinette Poisson — Marquise de Pompadour — who served as official chief mistress to Louis XV from 1745 until her death in 1764. Her influence extended well beyond the bedchamber: she directed royal patronage toward the Rococo artists and philosophes of the Enlightenment, effectively functioning as an unofficial minister of culture. The Sèvres porcelain manufactory was established largely through her lobbying.

She died at Versailles aged 42, reportedly of tuberculosis, still technically holding her court appointment.
