This coin closes out Spain's multi-year commemorative arc on the first circumnavigation, marking the 500th anniversary of the fleet's return in September 1522. Of the five ships and roughly 270 men who departed Sanlúcar de Barrameda in 1519, only the Victoria completed the voyage — eighteen men aboard, commanded by Juan Sebastián Elcano, Magellan having been killed in the Philippines in April 1521. Elcano, a Basque captain who had earlier participated in a mutiny against Magellan, received from Charles I a coat of arms bearing a globe and the Latin inscription Primus circumdedisti me.
