10 Euros Karl von Normann-Ehrenfels

Karl von Normann-Ehrenfels was a German philhellene who fought alongside Greek insurgents during the War of Independence in the 1820s, one of dozens of European volunteers drawn by Romantic idealism and Greek antiquity. Greece has issued a series of commemorative silver pieces honoring these foreign fighters, and Normann-Ehrenfels sits in relatively obscure company — celebrated in Greece, largely forgotten in his native Württemberg. He died of fever at Navarino in 1822, never seeing the independent state his service helped bring about.
