Issued to mark the 300th anniversary of the Biblioteca Nacional de España, founded by Philip V in 1712 — a direct transplant of the French royal library model he had grown up with at Versailles. The institution was initially called the Biblioteca Pública de Su Majestad and was only opened to the public decades after its founding, making the "public" in its original name something of an overstatement for most of the 18th century.
The .925 silver commemorative series from this period of Juan Carlos I's reign was already running in the shadow of Spain's debt crisis, and mintages on cultural issues like this one were sharply curtailed from prior years.
